Advanced Instrumentation and Control
i. Designed multi-array detector for detection of organo-phosphates.

ii. Developed analytical control algorithms for paper machines.

Intelligent Instrumentation and Digital Imaging utilising re-programmable hardware
i.Developed imaging hardware and software for a Bio-Assay instrument.

ii. Developed a system for real time analysis of chemistry in a paper machine.

Mathematical Modelling of Chemical Systems for Control Purposes
i. Modelled wet end of the paper machine and developed control algorithms for it.

The Business and Economics of Technology
i.Obtained support from 3 major companies for paper machine development project.

ii Wrote business plans and sought and obtained financial support from industry for development of the Bio-Assay instrument.

Science and Engineering


" Design and implementation of I&C systems including complex P.I.D algorithms.
" Modula 2, Pascal and C used for coding control algorithms and mathematical models.
" Designed, built and commissioned bespoke PC hardware and software systems interfaced to instrumentation for data sampling and analysis.
" Used varied instrumentation including a coulter counter, a photometric dispersion analyser and many others on a paper machine pilot plant.
" Use of Access and Excel to produce reports and a reference database utilising many different integrated tables on system wide Input/Output points.
" Data analysis using Mathcad, Excel and Access.
" Used P&ID's, control narratives, CAD drawings and other technical schematics as inputs to the control design and as outputs for documentation purposes.
" Programming in Verilog, and other, Hardware Description Languages for FPGA's.
" Development of a novel micro-array instrument utilising electrophoresis for separations and blue laser light to induce bio-fluorescence
" Use of re-configurable computing technology for image analysis.
" Implementation of advanced wireless network with 3 to 4 PCs and a MAC, and a 6.4MBPs internet connection with full firewall, virus and spy ware protection.
" PC support desk experience, including going into the field to carry out installations of hardware and software, routine system maintenance and end user training.
" Physical and chemical sampling of active systems
" Designed a triple array Ion Mobility Spectrometer using a Computer Aided Design package.

" Responsible for marketing Foundation year at Avalon College.
" Extensive report writing experience with all aspects of MS office and other DTP.
" Lead software engineer in a small group producing software and graphics for I and C..
" Customer liaison and commercial input on design deviations from the contract.
" Commercial development and analysis of research and development work, writing a business plan for BBSRC competition and I also secured external financial support for projects.
" MBA projects included 2 live projects for a supplier to the oil industry in the former Soviet Union developing marketing and supply chain strategies. Achieved 1st class grade for both.

" National research officer and training officer for the nightline counselling organisation.
